Safety tips
The “privacy first” promise, and the advice the company published with it.
We refer to SameGrain as the “privacy first” social discovery platform, because SameGrain makes every effort to protect your identity and will never disclose your email address. However, you must protect it too.
Protect your privacy
If you want to protect your privacy, do not use your real full name as your user name. Be creative and create an identity that reflects your interests — just keep it clean.
Maintain your privacy
Never post personal contact information in your profile, and do not share your real name, phone number, email address, home address, employer or any other identifying information in messages until you have established a reasonable level of trust with the other party.
Mulch creeps and report abusive users
SameGrain defined creeps as anyone who makes you feel uncomfortable — posting inappropriate comments, intimidating or threatening you, posting offensive photos, lying, asking for money, sending spam, or pushing you to reveal personal or financial information.
Mulching puts you in control. Users do not know when they have been mulched, and cannot connect with you again unless you recycle them from your mulch pile. Report the behaviour to safety@samegrain.com, and call law enforcement if you feel threatened.
Know people online before meeting offline
Use the tools that protect your anonymity to get to know someone first. The company recommended free live video chat before meeting in person — and warned that your user name or the background of your video should not disclose your identity.
Offline gatherings
Never meet anyone by yourself, and always meet and stay in a public location. Tell a friend or family member where you are going and who you are meeting; bring a phone, stay sober, control your own transport, and never leave your drink or belongings unattended.
Kids, teens, parents
If you are younger than 13, you could not use SameGrain. Teens were advised to talk only with users in their age range, to mulch anyone who acted creepy, and never to meet offline without a parent or guardian. Parents were encouraged to talk with their teenagers about what SameGrain was and why the safety recommendations mattered.
